Experimental results received by Anne Massey and Mitzi Montoya (see for example http://www.educause.edu/EDUCAUSE+Review/EDUCAUSEReviewMagazineVolume43/ManagingtheServicesLifecycle/163182) show that:

  • When given equal access to a variety of tools, successful teams see an opportunity to use new technologies (Web 2.0, Second Life) to their advantage, while underperformers stick to "what they know best."
  • Second Life was shown to be a crucial element in the sequence from social relationships to team relationships and team performance. It is also shown to be a good platform for holding decision-making discussions. Use other tools that provide the means to write, edit, share, and store project-related documents to complement Second Life.
  • Teams preferring and relying exclusively on face-to-face meetings might subjectively feel most confident in their performance. However, objective measurements disprove the validity of that feeling. In fact, these teams failed to match the performance of teams that took advantage of Second Life.
